Surf Rod
From The Angler's Dictionary — your encyclopedia of fishing rods, reels, and tackle
A surf rod is a long, powerful fishing rod designed for casting from the beach or shoreline out past the breaking waves. Surf rods typically range from 9 to 15 feet in length — significantly longer than standard freshwater rods — because the extra length provides the leverage needed to launch heavy sinkers and bait rigs extreme distances, often 100 yards or more.
Surf rods are built with medium-heavy to heavy power ratings and moderate to moderate-fast actions. The moderate action helps load the rod during the long casting stroke required for maximum distance. Most surf rods are two-piece or three-piece for transport convenience, as a 12-foot one-piece rod is impractical for most vehicles.
Surf rods come in both spinning and conventional configurations. Spinning surf rods pair with large spinning reels (5000-8000 size) and are easier for most anglers to cast long distances. Conventional surf rods pair with large conventional reels and require more skill but offer greater line capacity and cranking power for battling large fish in strong surf currents. Common species targeted from the surf include striped bass, redfish, bluefish, pompano, and sharks.
