Spincast Reel
From The Angler's Dictionary — your encyclopedia of fishing rods, reels, and tackle
A spincast reel is a closed-face reel that covers the spool with a nose cone, hiding the internal mechanisms from view. Casting is controlled by pressing and releasing a thumb button on the back of the reel — push the button, swing the rod forward, release the button, and the line flies out. This simplicity makes spincast reels the easiest reel type to learn, which is why they dominate the youth and casual angler market.
Inside the cone, a spincast reel works similarly to a spinning reel. The spool remains stationary during the cast and a pickup pin rotates around it to retrieve line. However, the enclosed design creates more friction than an open spinning reel, which limits casting distance and performance. Line capacity is typically modest, and the reels work best with monofilament line in the 4- to 12-pound range.
Gear ratios tend to be low (3.1:1 to 5.1:1), and drag systems are simpler than what you find on spinning or baitcasting reels. The most recognized spincast brand is Zebco, whose 33 and 202 models have introduced millions of anglers to fishing. While serious tournament anglers rarely use spincast reels, they remain excellent starter reels for children, an affordable entry point for beginners, and a reliable backup reel for simple bait fishing situations where maximum performance is not the priority.
