Slow (high torque)
A low ratio trades speed for cranking power. It is the choice for baits that pull hard — deep-diving crankbaits, big swimbaits, slow-rolled spinnerbaits — where you want the reel to do the heavy lifting and you want to feel the lure working. Medium (all-around)

Fast (quick pickup)
